Class of 2023 – Skylar

I have two goals for my photo sessions: get great photographs and have fun taking them. I wasn’t too worried about the first goal because I always overshoot. That way I know for sure that there will be some great photographs. I knew that I had accomplished the second goal when Skylar’s mom kept saying how much fun she had. I will say that this vibrant and beautiful, young lady made my job very easy. I ended up taking way too many photos which made it really difficult to choose the best ones. This is when overshooting gets me in trouble.

We ended up going to two different locations. Pine Tree Pond Park was our first location. I have a close connection with this park. My backyard leads right to it and I spent many of my teenage and adult years going to it. It is a beautiful park and has many great spots for backgrounds.

Our second location was at the Cottage Grove Ravine. This state park has lots of fun and interesting backgrounds so I was pretty excited when Skylar and her mom chose this place.

It’s always fun to see how the shot was taken so I love when my clients take pictures while I am shooting. Photo credit goes to Skylar’s mom, Jess.

Location and Lighting: A pony, a goat and a really cute 6 year old named Harper.

Here is another one of my favorite locations for photo shoots. This one is at at my friends hobby farm in Cottage Grove. The day we planned for was supposed to be cloudy which is my favorite type of weather for natural lighting. I was a little disappointed when I woke up and saw that the sun was shining bright. As much as I love the sun, it can be very challenging for photos especially during the middle of the day when the sun is at it’s highest. It is a good thing that I love a challenge.

For Harper’s photo shoot we walked around the property looking for areas that have the most interesting backgrounds and where I could work around the bright sun. When working a photo shoot on a sunny day, you want to make sure that the sun is not facing your subject. As you can see in the example below, it causes eye squinting, dark shadows around the eyes and an overexposed (very bright) face.

To adjust for the brightness of the sun, Harpers photos were all shot with either the sun behind her or to the left or right of her. If you look at the brightest spots on her hair, that will tell you the direction the sun is facing. You can see that she is not squinting and there are no dark shadows around her eyes.

Finding areas that the sun is being blocked by a building can work well too as you can see in the photo with the wagon wheel. The building behind her was blocking the sun which created a small area that we could use to get nice lighting.

The main reason we chose the hobby farm was for the ponies and the goats. Harper had never met a pony or goat before so this was a new experience for her. She was a natural once she got used to them. Daisy the pony and Flirt the goat were not quite as cooperative as Harper. You can’t tell in the photos but we struggled quite a bit. We had lots of retakes but managed to get some great shots.

McKenna

Sweet McKenna’s 2 year photo session. She was a little skeptical of the studio at first. It probably didn’t help that I had a cardboard cutout of Alfred Hitchcock hanging out in my studio. It was hiding behind a curtain but she spotted it. Once we removed Alfred she was much happier and we were able to get some great pictures.

Cora – Easter Mini Session

Cora had so much fun with her Easter mini session. I still have openings on Friday, March 20th and Sunday March 22nd. My studio is clean and disinfected in between sessions. PM me or send an email to casphoto@comcast.net and I can get you signed up!

I think Meadow was a little jealous. She kept photo bombing.

Alice – Easter Mini Session

The Easter mini sessions have begun!  The sessions are $85. The photo session and 5 edited digital files are included in that price. The pictures are all taken in my home studio or outside if it is nice out that day.
